Spruce Knob plane crash

Autumn colors grace Spruce Knob, in Pendleton County, in October 2012. On June 14, 1950, a U.S. Air Force Reserve crew of nine died in a crash of a North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber on Spruce Knob. The crash occurred near the top of the highest point in West Virginia, seen here at upper left.

Mason Strawder, a farmer in the Simoda community of Pendleton County, was awake and reading a newspaper shortly after 3 a.m. on June 14, 1950, when an unusual noise in the night sky caught his attention.
