Tracy McClanahan, Barboursville Middle School teacher and local union member, spoke during a Cabell County Board of Education meeting on Nov. 19, 2024.
HUNTINGTON 人妖色情片 Local teachers are worried the Cabell County Board of Education will consider ending the career literacy course at the end of this school year.
Superintendent Tim Hardesty said Thursday he could not clarify if or why the county would attempt to do away with the program before the board人妖色情片檚 personnel hearings on Monday, when members will have a chance to officially review those positions.
But he confirmed all of the county人妖色情片檚 career literacy teachers appear on the transfer and reduction-in-force (RIF) lists for professional personnel this season.
None of those employees, Hardesty said, were placed on the lists for reasons related to their job performance.
Tracy McClanahan has been a career literacy teacher at Barboursville Middle School for nine years since the course was adapted from the previously taught reading courses.
Tracy McClanahan, Barboursville Middle School teacher and local union member, spoke during a Cabell County Board of Education meeting on Nov. 19, 2024.
She is currently on the list of professional personnel recommended to be transferred, and she was the first to speak to the board publicly about it during a regular meeting earlier this month.
She said she was told she would be recommended for transfer from her position due to the 人妖色情片渃hanging needs of the county,人妖色情片 but she believed the course would likely be cut due to the county人妖色情片檚 shrinking enrollment and state funding.
人妖色情片淢y question is this: Can we afford to cut an integral part of education from our students人妖色情片 lives? Can we afford to limit their achievement?人妖色情片 she asked the board.
McClanahan said the course was originally created because the district recognized students were having difficulties with informational texts.
She said career literacy teaches reading, writing, speaking, listening and reasoning through the lens of careers. Students in her class create businesses, hold mock elections, make campaign commercials and learn persuasive speaking and budgeting, among other subjects.
人妖色情片淚t人妖色情片檚 not just coming in, sitting down, and having to write for 50 minutes. It人妖色情片檚 an enjoyable class, and we can make it enjoyable, and we make them want to come to school and have career literacy class. And it人妖色情片檚 just, I feel it人妖色情片檚 a loss for (students),人妖色情片 McClanahan said.
Overall, she said reading scores relating to informational texts among her students increased after taking the course. Without the career literacy class, she said other teachers will likely have to take on the content standards for the career literacy class and may not be able to spend additional time on specific areas where students are lacking.
人妖色情片淚t saddens me that, you know, that we have to keep disappointing these kids. It just, it really upsets me. I mean, they have enough disappointment in life already, and here we are cutting a class that makes them excited to come to school,人妖色情片 McClanahan said.
Melissa Morton, who has also taught career literacy at BMS for about nine years, received a transfer letter. She said while she understands career literacy may seem like an easy chunk to cut from the county人妖色情片檚 budget, her students could be losing reading instruction while other teachers are overloaded.
人妖色情片淚t人妖色情片檚 all nonfiction text, which is one of our lowest areas. When we do state testing informational texts, it人妖色情片檚 just a difficult one for the students to grasp. So, as much experience that they get with it, the better off they are,人妖色情片 Morton said.
Morton said different levels of career literacy teach different modules, including health science, construction, engineering and agriculture, which open students up to professions they may have never heard of. She said this is also beneficial when it comes time for them to schedule their high school courses.
Holly Baumgartner was traditionally an English language arts teacher, and this was her first year teaching career literacy at BMS. She said it was nice to focus on nonfiction with her students.
人妖色情片淲hen you combine the reading and the writing standards, and there人妖色情片檚 fiction and nonfiction, it人妖色情片檚 really overwhelming for students and teachers to cover the amount of material to prepare students for our state assessment.人妖色情片 she said.
David Watson, another career literacy teacher at BMS who received a transfer letter, said his students were able to find jobs they were interested in.
人妖色情片淚 have had a fair number of students come to me later on who have told me that my class and career literacy in general was instrumental in helping them make some of these most important decisions (in) what they were going to do,人妖色情片 Watson said.
Deborah Evans said her career literacy students at BMS learned additional skills such as how to become productive citizens, navigate society and build relationships.
人妖色情片淭his class ties everything we人妖色情片檙e learning together because in their projects. They use math in their product. They use everything that they learn in English, science 人妖色情片 so it pulls it all together,人妖色情片 Evans said. 人妖色情片淚t is a safety valve for the emotional development of these students. It人妖色情片檚 a class where you can let off steam.人妖色情片
Bethany Kirtner teaches career literacy at Huntington Middle School and received a RIF letter after three years in the role. She said her certification is in English, and she feels students need every type of English class they can get.
Kirtner人妖色情片檚 daughter also attends the school, and she said she人妖色情片檚 seen how it has been beneficial to her to have both career literacy and English language arts courses.
人妖色情片淚 feel like because she人妖色情片檚 getting just so much in her career lit class, it just goes hand in hand with the English class just to help even more with her reading and her literacy,人妖色情片 Kirtner said. 人妖色情片淚 feel like so much is expected from English teachers already.人妖色情片
Hearings for all teachers who received RIF or transfer letters will take place during a special meeting at the board office meeting room at 2850 5th Ave. beginning at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
