The Mountaineers pounded out 13 hits and again bashed the baseball all over Springs Brooks Stadium on Saturday, collecting their second win of the young season with an 8-3 decision over Kent State.

WVU got on the board as early as possible as leadoff hitter Austin Davis jumped on the first pitch he saw and drove it over the left-field wall to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat for the second consecutive day. Kent State countered with a solo homer of its own in the bottom of the second, but then starting pitchers Ben Hampton of West Virginia and Collin Romel of Kent State settled into grooves.

Each weathered an opposing scoring threat. Hampton allowed a sacrifice fly that temporarily put the Flashes ahead 2-1, but he struck out the side twice around that. Romel fanned three over next three innings, and after five, the quickly-moving game looked like a pitchers人妖色情片� duel.

Then came the Mountaineer sixth, and an avalanche. WVU sent 14 batters to the plate, starting with JJ Weatherholt, who singled. Victor Scott then turned on a pitch and crushed it over the right-centerfield wall to restore the Mountaineer lead and chase Romel from the hill.

WVU then took advantage of the first of two Kent fielding miscues as Nathan Blasick reached second when his popup fell among three Flash fielders. That brought freshman Grant Hussey to the plate, and for the second time in two days, he came up big, as his drive to left center easily cleared the wall for another two-run homer.

Austin Davis and Victor Scott later followed with a run-scoring single and an RBI walk, respectively, and by the time the carnage was done, 12 Mountaineers had appeared at the plate, giving WVU a 7-2 lead.

Hussey credited a summer change with being able to drive the ball to the opposite field.

人妖色情片淭he biggest thing was strikeouts. Over the summer I had trouble with off-speed stuff, and over the fall I really worked with that. Another big thing was Coach Mazey wanted me to do was drive the ball to the opposite field, and that人妖色情片檚 what I really worked on,人妖色情片� he said.

Lost in the offensive explosion was the work of WVU人妖色情片檚 pitching staff. Hampton, who was credited with the win after working five innings, struck out 10 while allowing just three hits and two walks. Reliever Chase Smith had a shaky frame in which Kent State managed two infield hits, but he then struck out two, and after plunking Mack Timbrook, managed to deflect a grounder up the middle that went right to second baseman Mikey Kluska, who flipped it to Tevin Tucker for a forceout.

Ben Abernathy then worked two innings, making one mistake which resulted in another Kent State solo homer, but that was his only negative, and Jacob Watters came on for a perfect ninth in which he also fanned two. Pitching in what is commonly considered to be a hitters park, the Mountaineers limited a Kent State team that had scored eight runs just a day earlier.

The top of the Mountaineer order was again uber-productive. Davis was 3-5 with two RBI, and Weatherholt continued his excellent start with a pair of singles. Scott was 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Hussey had a pair of extra-base hits, adding a double to his homer.

Down the order, catcher Leonard Dayne had a hit and two RBI.

West Virginia continues in the Baseball at the Beach event with another 11 a.m. game on Sunday, rematching against Central Michigan, which it knocked off 13-8 on Friday.
