West Virginia State University fields teams filled with athletes from the Tri-State. Baseball is one of the more popular squads for local players.
Following is a look at six who played for the Yellow Jackets this past school year:
ETHYN BARNITZ, Wahama HS.
The sophomore catcher played in 16 games, earning seven starts. He batted .300 with two home runs, a pair of doubles and 11 runs batted in. Barnitz reached base at a .432 clip and slugged .567. Barnitz posted a 1.000 fielding percentage.
TYRUS BAUMGARDNER, Spring Valley HS. A graduate student, the righthanded pitcher hurled in 16 games, all in relief. He went 2-1 with a 7.47 earned run average. In 15 2/3 innings, Baumgardner allowed 20 hits, struck out four and walked eight. Opponents hit .328. For his career, Baumgardner was 8-5 with a 6.69 ERA. In 75 1/3
innings, he gave up 87 hits, fanned 43 and walked 46. Foes batted .292.
BRIAN LINGENFELTER, Cabell Midland HS. The junior righthander pitched in 13 games, starting three. He went 6-2 with a 7.64 ERA and two saves. Lingenfelter permitted 75 hits in 55 1/3
innings, striking out 47 and walking 32. Opponents hit .316.
ZANE LOVELADY, Gallia Academy.
A junior lefthander, Lovelady went 0-4 with a 12.91 ERA. In 11 games, two starts, and 23 innings, he allowed 32 hits, struck out 17 and walked 28. Opponents batted .337.
JARED NETHERCUTT, Cabell Midland HS
. The true freshman righthander made a strong debut, going 4-1 in nine games, eight in relief. Nethercutt gave up 28 hits in 25 innings, struck out 13 and walked six. Foes batted .277.
ETHAN SPOLARICH, Hurricane HS. Spolarich started all 49 games, hit one home run, knocked in eight runs and batted .196 as a junior. The outfielder smacked five doubles, walked 14 times, was hit by five pitches and stole two bases. Spolarich slugged .254 and posted a .288 on base percentage. He fielded .968.
