CHARLESTON ÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬” That a Hurricane High School athlete would be the high-point performer in the WVSSAC Class AAA boys state track and field meet on Saturday was expected.
The question was, which one? The answer is JaiÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬™Den Smith. On a team with All-American distance runner Ty Steorts and talented thrower Ethan Chill, Smith emerged as the top point-earner.
Smith won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.01 seconds, nipping Huntington HighÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬™s Carter Geveke by 0.07 ticks. Smith was third in the 110 hurdles in 15.03, trailing winner Kaleil Lewis of University by 0.15. Smith was third in the long jump at 20 feet, 7.25 inches. Isaiah Beard of Washington won at 22-7.75.
Smith joined Sean Legros, Zach Turner and Max Tidd on the winning 4x110 shuttle hurdles relay team that finished in 56.91, 0.69 ahead of second place Woodrow Wilson.
Smith was ranked third in the 300 hurdles.

Smith said the race was more than sheer speed.

Smith, who signed to play football and run track at Bluefield State, said his goal was to win at least one individual championship and for the Redskins to take the state title. Hurricane finished with 80 points, second to UniversityÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬™s 95.
Woodrow Wilson placed third with 67, followed by Cabell Midland with 57, Morgantown 51, Spring Mills 50.5, Parkersburg 45, Huntington High 41, Jefferson 31, Bridgeport and Washington each with 28, George Washington 20, Winfield 18, Musselman 17, Capital and Wheeling Park 13 each, Parkersburg South and Greenbrier East each with 11, Brooke 9, Fairmont Senior 5, John Marshall 4, Hedgesville 3.5, Martinsburg 2, and Oak Hill and Nitro 1 each.
University of Tennessee-bound Steorts won the 1,600 in 4:06.34 and the 3,200 in 9:11.81. Chill won the shot put at 58 feet, 1.75 inches, a personal record by two feet.
Chill, who was fourth in the discus, has signed with Marshall University. He said he expected to win the shot.

Matthew Edwards of Cabell Midland placed third in the shot at 51-3.5.

The KnightsÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬™ Aidan Kneeland won the 800 in 1:52.57 and was second in the 1,600 in 4:09.68. He teamed with Dylan Dial, Jacob Barthlow and Coleson Elswick to win the 4x800 in 7:56.15.
For the Cabell Midland girls, M.J. Daniels leaped 5-2 to finish second in the high jump. Delainey Burger, Maya Casto, Quinn Hazelett and Adalynn Cantrell teamed to win the 4x800 relay in 9:37.17.
Huntington HighÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬™s girls led after 17 of 19 events before Morgantown passed the Highlanders to win the title 99-94.
Mallori Dunn-Martin starred for Huntington High, winning the 300 hurdles in 44.01. Teammate Malleah Johnson was second in 47.89 and won the 100 hurdles in 14.64, 0.09 ahead of Dunn-Martin. Siraye Harper was second in the long jump. Johnson, Dunn-Martin, Harper and Audrey Flynn combined to win the 4x100 in 48.68. Flynn, Dunn-Martin, Quincey Mullins and Colette Dickerson teamed to place second in the 4x200.
Following the Highlanders in the team standings was Greenbrier East with 76, University 49, Jefferson 47, Bridgeport 44, Cabell Midland and John Marshall each with 35, Martinsburg 25, Riverside and Spring Mills each 23.5, St. Albans 20, Hedgesville and Washington 19, Woodrow Wilson 18, Wheeling Park 12, Oak Hill 11, Parkersburg and Parkersburg South with 8 each, Winfield, Hurricane and Musselman 7 apiece, Spring Valley 6, Nitro and Preston 5 and Fairmont Senior 4.
Point Pleasant won the Class AA boys title with 113 points, 47 more than runner-up Frankfort. Williamstown was third with 57, followed by Keyser with 47, Hampshire 41, Elkins 40, Wheeling Central 35, James Monroe 30, Nicholas County and Grafton 29 each, East Fairmont 22, Lincoln 19, PikeView 18, Bluefield and Shady Spring 17 each, Weir 16, South Harrison, Chapmanville, Roane County and Oak Glen 14 apiece, Poca 13, Philip Barbour 11, Buffalo 10, Sissonville 8, Ripley and Robert C. Byrd 3 each, Herbert Hoover 2, and Clay County and Lewis County 1 each.
Point PleasantÈËÑýÉ«Ç鯬™s Grant Barton won the 110 hurdles in 14.71. Caden Hill triumphed in the shot put at 55-5.25 and discus at 175-2.

The Big Blacks also won the 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relays.
For Wahama, Connor Lambert won the 100 in 10.61 and the 200 in 21.84. Trace Simpkins won the 300 hurdles in 40.93. The White Falcons finished second in Class A with 92 points. Doddridge County won with 134.
Magnolia placed third with 73 ahead of Trinity Christian with 57, Ritchie County 53.5, Greenbrier West 47, Tyler Consolidated 44, St, Marys 37, Tucker County 27, Charleston Catholic 24, East Hardy 21.5, Paw Paw and Pendleton County 18 each, Moorefield 14, Summers County 8, Valley Wetzel 7, Wirt County 6, Cameron and Wyoming East 4 each, Ravenswood, Union and Sherman 3 apiece, Clay-Battelle 2, and Weirton Madonna and Richwood 1 each.
Williamstown won the Class AA girls championship with 90 points. Herbert Hoover was second with 69.33, followed by East Fairmont with 69, Elkins 68, Point Pleasant 45.66, Weir 39, Hampshire 35.5, Grafton 30, Wheeling Central 29.5, Shady Spring 29, Ripley 27.5, North Marion 24, Sissonville and Oak Glen 22 each, Keyser and Nicholas County 18 each, Lewis County 15, Roane County 13, Buffalo and Berkeley Springs 6 each, Independence 5, South Harrison 4.5, PikeView and Robert C.
